Discovering Our

Deepest Life in

the Body 

Meditating with the Body is a training program developed by the Buddhist scholar and meditation teacher Dr. Reggie Ray.  In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the body is considered to be the gateway to enlightenment — to discover the body is to discover awareness and our own most direct and effective path to profound spiritual transformation. 

Designed for beginning and experienced meditators alike, this in-depth training focuses on a series of transformative body-based meditation practices drawn from Tibetan Yoga.  The comprehensive six-month program cultivates learning and discovery through systematic study, intensive practice, group retreats, and integration of the practices into daily life. 

This is the first time the program has been offered as an online course.  The training involves three 3-day online retreats where participants are introduced to the practices within the depth of an at-home retreat and supported by live talks, guided meditations, and discussions.  Between retreats, practice deepens through an extensive at-home curriculum of readings, recorded teachings, and guided practices enriched by weekly live Zoom gatherings with the instructors, Libby Weathers and Jonathan Daniel. 

The Meditating with the Body program allows us to deeply integrate the practices associated with the Ground Yana stage of the Dharma Ocean path of somatic meditation.  Completion of the course may be used to fulfill the pre-requisite for participating in The Somatic Practice of Pure Awareness online course.

Dr. Reggie Ray (Curriculum Teacher) is the co-founder and Spiritual Director of the Dharma Ocean Foundation, dedicated to the evolution and flowering of the somatic teachings of Tibetan Tantra. He is a lineage holder in the tradition of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. The author of many books, audio courses, and online series, Reggie’s work and teachings draw from his background as a Buddhist academic and practitioner. He holds a Ph.D. from the Divinity School of the University of Chicago in History of Religions. Reggie cofounded the Religious Studies program at Naropa University with Chögyam Trungpa, where he taught for over 30 years. 

Reggie remains engaged in the transmission of this lineage through his involvement with Dharma Ocean students, the creation of new offerings such as this course, and in his lifelong work as a student and as a teacher. 

Libby Weathers (Course Instructor) has been studying and practicing Buddhism for 15-years and holds a degree in Contemplative Psychology. She began studying with Reggie Ray at Naropa University in 2007 and first completed the Meditating with the Body program in 2009. Professionally, Libby trains business leaders in developing purpose and presence through mindfulness and neuroscience. A depth of continued awakening over her years of study and practice inspires her dedication to this lineage. Libby is deeply connected to the natural beauty, warm waters, and sacredness of Hawaii where she spends most of her time.

Jonathan Daniel (Course Instructor) began his journey with meditation in the forests of Colorado and Alaska in 1994, and stepped onto the path of training with Reggie in 1997.  He worked for many years as a hospice chaplain in before becoming inspired by the possibilities of helping people across the globe access the Dharma Ocean teachings through digital media.  He enjoys practicing meditation with the small Dharma Ocean sangha in Denver and also alone in high mountain meadows.  Jonathan currently resides in Crestone, CO.

Meditating with the Body is designed for “householders”— for those of us who have chosen to engage in a spiritual path inside of careers, families, and the great stressors (and great opportunities) provided by living in the world, as it is.  This program teaches techniques that are meant to be integrated into your daily life and help you establish a committed practice at home.

Dharma Ocean instructors have a longstanding commitment to the Dharma Ocean path and lineage.  As practitioners, they are committed to their personal practice and complete many weeks of residential and solitary retreat before being trained and authorized to teach.  Many have been students of Reggie’s for 10 years or more, and all have thousands of hours of active meditation training and practice.

A talk offered by Dr. Reggie Ray

In this video, Reggie presents the body as the realm of direct experience.  He says that the body is at this moment in a state of awakening and the experience that arises in the body is immaculate.  He goes on to describe how the practice of meditation expands our openness to direct experience — the more we open to experience, the less room there is for ego, for coherent self-concept.  Thus, as we let go, our incarnation becomes ever more an expression of Life itself.
