September 13 – November 21

Our body is the most direct and perfect path to profound spiritual transformation. Through our body, we connect with the inherent, self-existing wakefulness already present within it—and us.

The depth and structure of Awakening the Body provide practitioners with a guided, step-by-step approach to uncovering the wisdom of the soma, the body, and integrating it into everyday life. This course combines timeless insights around spiritual realization with an understanding of psychological insights and attachments. It brings some of Tibet’s most powerful practices in-line with a modern understanding of the brain and the mind.

Watch a video introduction from Dr. Reggie Ray

Reggie talks about the uniqueness of the somatic lineage offered in the Dharma Ocean lineage. He provides a short context for the course and the practices, and how within the body right now is the experience being awake, free, whole, and inspired.

Dr. Reggie Ray

Dr. Reginald “Reggie” Ray is the co-founder and Spiritual Director of the Dharma Ocean Foundation, dedicated to the evolution and flowering of the somatic teachings of Tibetan Tantra. He is a lineage holder in the tradition of Chögyam Trungpa, Rinpoche. The author of many books, audio courses, and online series, Reggie’s work and teachings draw from his background as a Buddhist academic and practitioner. His PhD is in the History of Religions from the Divinity School of the University of Chicago.

After a personal invitation from Chögyam Trungpa, Reggie became the first full-time faculty member and chair of the Buddhist Studies (later Religious Studies) Department at Naropa University. Over more than 30 years he grew the department, developing with Trungpa Rinpoche many initiatives and projects that became signatures of Naropa.

Reggie remains engaged in the transmission of this lineage through his involvement with Dharma Ocean students, the creation of new offerings such as this course, and in his lifelong work as a student and as a teacher.

Caroline Pfohl

Caroline Pfohl is the lineage successor of the  Dharma Ocean lineage. Her spiritual journey has included three decades of study and practice in Chan, Taoism, and Tibetan Buddhism.  Within Dharma Ocean, she holds the role of Desung (Protector of Joy), and drawing on lifelong work in educating and healing, she takes the lead in bringing somatic meditation into the arenas of mentoring, relationships, family, well-being, and the arts.

Shaun “Skye” LaChute

Skye has been studying and practicing with Reggie Ray since 2002 and is the senior teacher for Dharma Ocean Seattle. The somatic meditation practices have had a profound and healing impact on her life and work. As a naturopathic physician, Skye’s passion is helping people discover the healing power of nature: the innate nature of wisdom, sacredness and well-being already available within their own bodies. Both personally and professionally, she has discovered that the journey to health and healing is found within the body, discovering its true nature and supporting its vitality, rather than trying to escape or suppress discomfort and unease.

“Meditation is learning to tap into the wisdom, inspiration and unconditional love of the body. All we need to do is let go and let the body show us our true life.”

 — Reggie Ray

Quenching Our Deepest Thirst

In this video, Reggie explores how much of the spirituality offered today is something to be bought, sold, and possessed, and is incapable of quenching our deepest thirst, or touching the reasons we sought a spiritual practice in the first place. Yet there is a way for us to access the wisdom that can meet our deepest human need, a wisdom that brings us to the direct heart of our human experience.

  • The role of meditation as fundamental to human transformation
  • Understanding the process of somatic meditation
  • The posture of meditation as a practice
  • Ten different kinds of somatic meditation practices to connect you with the wisdom in your body
  • Ways of knowing and moving from ego identification to our true self
  • Uncovering the three “kayas” (or bodies) of the Buddha, and why this matters
  • Working with traumas big and small, through somatic meditation as a path of healing
  • The tantric relationship to the body as a part of a somatic, body-based  practice
  • The body as sacred journey, and the modern spiritual imperative
  • Cultivating a daily somatic meditation practice

Integration into your daily life

Awakening the Body is designed for “householders” — for those of us who have chosen to engage in a spiritual path inside of careers, families, and the great stressors (and great opportunities) provided by living in the world, as it is. This program has a go-at-your-own-pace philosophy that helps practitioners not feel like they’re getting behind on the teachings and the practices. If life gets busy and you miss a week here or there, you can still come back to the trainings and the community when the time is right.

Support from trained Meditation Instructors

Dharma Ocean meditation instructors are engaged with the full Dharma Ocean path and complete many weeks of residential, solitary retreat, and personal practice before being trained and authorized as a meditation instructor. Most have been students of Reggie for at least 5 years and many for 10 years or more, and all have thousands of hours of active meditation training and practice.

“Our body is the most direct and perfect path to profound spiritual transformation. Through our body, we connect with the inherent, self-existing wakefulness that is already present within it.”

EXCERPT FROM THE COURSE

Below is a video excerpt from the tenth week of the course, “Trust experience”. In this talk, Reggie reminds us that spirituality and spiritual practice have historically existed inside of mental maps. While these maps were once considered above questioning, they are now viewed as arbitrary and relative — and even potentially oppressive.

Yet somatic meditation can take us into an experience beyond any map or ideology, where we can access the deep truth of our being. Free of the limitations of any map, we can discover the territory of our own lives for ourselves.
